08/16/2017 - According to the latest figures from the Austrian statistical office Statistik Austria, a total of 585.3 million EUR was spent on research and development in Carinthia in 2015. This corresponds to a research quota of 3.15%. Carinthia has therefore succeeded in exceeding the EU target of 3% for the first time. Investment in research and development increased by +15.5% from 2013 to 2015.

Carinthia’s research system has traditionally been heavily dominated by commercial research & development. The R&D quota increased from 2.54% (2013) to 2.87% (2015). Yet the quota in the public (university, university of applied sciences) and private non-profit sector fell from 0.32 to 0.27%.

Carinthia is therefore on a level with Upper Austria (3.18%) and Tyrol (3.14%) and slightly above the level for Austria as a whole (3.09%). Styria (5.16%) and Vienna (3.66%) have the highest R&D quotas.
